Abstract


This article reviews the origins and development of the concerto and J. C. Bach’s compositions in this area, and summarizes the features of his musical language by analyzing his four piano concertos from their musical genre, harmonic texture, melody structure, and theme development.The article also makes a general description of the social environment and artistic styles in the early to mid-18th century Europe, as well as the pre-classical musical culture. And by putting J. C. Bach’s life and composition in such context, the article provides some clarification on the issues surrounding the transition in musical style between two periods. From the above analysis, we can understand the general characteristics of the music in the pre-classical period, and how the social environment, as the soil for the art environment, led to a transition in the aesthetic interest and artistic style in the early to mid-18th century Europe.
