Abstract


Emily Bronte published Wuthering Heights in December, 1847 by her pseudonym. Revenge complex which runs through the novel impressed me deeply. In my thesis, I will study the origins of revenge play in history and her inherit of revenge play in history, simultaneously; I will discuss the malposition phenomenon of revenge literature. This thesis consists of four parts.Introduction: briefly introduce the author Emily Bronte, the characters and plot in Wuthering Heights, its interpretation from western literature critical circus in 1900s, and present my own interpretational concept based on the deficiency in its interpretation.The first part: taking the ancient Greek tragedy,Αισχυλο?’s Oresteia, andΕυριπ?δη?’s masterpiece Medea for example, the author intends to compare Wuthering Heights’s inherit of the ancient Greek tragedy from the following four aspects: the theme, the narrative techniques, spirit of vengeance and the image of revenger.The second part: with a series of Shakespeare’s work as model, Wuthering Heights highlights the two characteristics of revenge play in Elizabeth, the image of“strangers”and“Seneca”element. And then the author analysis the characters and bloody atmosphere based on these two characteristics in Wuthering Heights, and all of these reflect that Emily Bronte inherited the revenge play in Elizabeth.The third part: taking Oresteia, Prince Hamlet and Wuthering Heights as example, the author analysizes the malposition in revenge literature in detail. Literature itself is a kind of hypothetical art, so the writer dare to infer that if there is no anyone’s appearance or no any action of revenge, what are the fates and character-direction of other people ? Malposition is the result of such inference, it would like to take advantage of great contrasts caused by the perspective of malposition, so as to alert readers to review the tragedy of disastrous consequences led by human’s folly, desires and narrow-mind. Although the emphasis point of these three works differs, as a revenge play, malposition is the necessary element in these three works. Malposition experiences the process of oracle-character-spirit, from inside to outside. This process is also choroids of western literature development.Brief Summary: summing up the origins of the formation of revenge literature and the foundation and significance of malposition..
