Abstract


Georg Simmel (1858-1918),as a philosopher and sociologist, was famous in academic world in German. He was honored as one of the three major classical ideologists of the theories of Modern Capitalism( the other two are Marx and Weber), and he was one of classical sociology instructors in contemporary social historians, and he was also a philosopher that almost has been forgotten. Philosophy of Money is a very important part of all his areas of research. By the analysis on money, as is the special social being, Simmel began his diagnosis for modern society. He tried to describe the association of the spirit life and the economic life in philosophy, investigating the decisive influence of economic activities on human psychologies and metaphysical base. Through the performance of the link between individual life and historical trend, Simmel gave a more conceptual comprehension of the economic structure. These intellective efforts and achievements showed the importance and unique charm of the thinking of Simmel.The purpose of this paper is to analyse and interpret the theory of Simmel’s Philosophy of money, and to explain the contemporary significance of the theory on monetary essence and on the modern culture of money. This paper makes a sketch of Simmel’s philosophical thought firstly, then focuses on the social and ideological background in 18th century, the theory of money essence in history and the nature of money. Then it analyse Simmel’s cultural theory of money. It focuses on the evolution of personal liberty and individual value under the monetary economy. Development of economy brought the free development of individualities to the owners as the currency, and at the same time triggered a series of negative psychological phenomena, depressed the value of human attributes, so that individuals can’t be own the ture freedom and independence of personality. At last, it discussed the modern life style under the monetary economy, mainly concentrates on the characteristics of the rational modern society. The development of modern culturl trends, and the psychological experiences of individuals in modern society when confronts currency of economic and objective culture. In the conclusion part, the author points out that Simmel’s study on the nature of money started from the end of Marx’s political economic, he analyzed money through the view of cultural philosophy, towards the end of the monetary nominalism, he integrated the philosophical research, cultural criticism and psychological analysis to his philosophy of money, provided a new perspective for the further development of Marx’s thought in contemporary West, and base the roof for the social critical theory. However, his thought is negative in essence. In Simmel’s view, modern society caused negative feelings of individual lives and negative response of people who lives in cities, and the lives disregard the diversity of life and be weary of the feeling of life. Simmel’s analysis on the monetary essence and the modern culture eventually become the theoretical basis of culture pessimism.
