Abstract


Contrastive studies of English and the language of the Buyi people have not yet drawn much attention from linguists. With the deepening of our country’s reform and the widening of opening-up, the students in the Buyi areas are supposed to learn at least one foreign language, for example, English. How to improve the Buyi students’ English pronunciation in such an ethnic area has drawn some teachers’ attention. The present author tries to make a contrastive study of Buyi language and English speech sounds in a systematical way, aiming at providing some fresh ideas that will shed light on English teaching and learning in the Buyi Ethnic areas, or even on the bilingual dictionary-compiling between Buyi language and English. This paper also hopes to offer some authentic language data to help people of other nationalities or other cultures to get to know Buyi language, especially its speech sound system.The thesis is made up of six chapters. The first chapter is a general survey of the contrastive studies on speech sounds conducted so far both at home and abroad. The body of the thesis is from Chapter Two to Chapter Five. Chapter Two provides the foundations of the contrast: physics, physiology and society. Chapter Three is concerned with the detailed descriptions and analyses of the vowels of Buyi and English in a contrastive way. Chapter Four deals with the consonants between them in detail and Chapter Five contrasts their respective suprasegmental features. The last chapter is the conclusion which is an overall review and a highlight of the main points. Some suggestions for English and Buyi language teaching, especially for phonetics teaching, and also the limitations of the research are stated in the conclusion part, too.
