Abstract

The age of globalization is an age of enhanced international communication in an unprecedented rate. In a world that seems to have become forever smaller, people of different culture, speak different languages find greater need to communicate with each other. Subsequently more international meetings are held, where interpreters play a vital role.Since the People’s Republic of China and the Republic of Korea (ROK) established diplomatic relationship in 1992, friendly cooperation between both countries has blossomed in various fields. The two countries have become close partners both in politics and economy. Particularly in terms of economy, China is the No.1 trade partner, the biggest import, export and investment market for the Republic of Korea who in turn is the third biggest trade partner for China. And this close relationship is also found in areas such as culture, education, technology, regional and international affairs. In 2010 the record of ROK citizens who visited China was more than 4 million cases, roughly ten percent of ROK’s total population. The increased number of international meetings between both countries poses greater demand on the number of interpreters. But the fact is there are not enough Chinese-Korean interpreters, especially those who could conduct simultaneous interpretation. Subsequently, there is also an urgent need to advance the study on Chinese-Korean conference interpretation. As for translation, professor Tai Pingwu from Minzu University of China has put forward a theory on Chinese-Korean translation that won wide approval. But in terms of the study on interpretation, there is little progress, the only exception is found in the study on Korean-Chinese interpretation. Little effort has been devoted to the study on Chinese-Korean interpretation, even rarer on Chinese-Korean conference interpretation. As the demand for Chinese-Korean conference interpreters are rapidly expanding, a study on Chinese-Korean conference interpretation has become necessary. The author has been practicing consecutive and simultaneous interpretation for Chinese-Korean conferences for the last ten years, and during the process has obtained considerable experience and data. From among various forms of interpretation, this paper will focus on the study of Chinese-Korean conference interpretation, combining interpretation theories and experience, so that the theories can be adopted in, and supplemented by, actual practice.Based on the characteristics of conference interpretation, this paper will approach the interpretation theories through case studies. The paper is divided in six chapters:Chapter One is an introduction of the aim and significance of conference interpretation, as well as the progress of study achieved so far; Chapter Two will elaborate on the distinction between various forms of interpretation, including simultaneous interpretation, consecutive interpretation, whispering interpretation, voice-over interpretation, relay interpretation, tele-interpretation, techno-interpretation, sight translation and special translation; Chapter Four is on vocabulary technique, how to deal with special norms such as the names of conference, the names of government and international institutions, company names, titles, names of places and people; Chapter Five deals with various translation skills involving reduction, addition, restructuring, complex sentences and idioms; Chapter Six is about interpreter’s tips, involving preparation, microphone, expression, dressing, table manners and equipments. The main argument of this paper is, although both interpretation and translation deal with language and aim at the transmission of information and ideas, there are considerable distinctions. Translation is the process of writing in the target language after reading in the source language, and there is time for deliberation. Interpretation is the process of speaking in target language after hearing phonetic symbols in the source language. This characteristic of interpretation is particularly notable in international conferences, where interpretation overcomes the linguistic obstacles for people from different cultures. In these situations interpretation is not a simple conversion of words and sentences from one language to another, but also conveys the cultural significance and subtexts carried by them, in other words interpretation is the communication between two ways of thinking shared by two distinctive nationalities. The author’s knowledge represented in this paper is derived mostly from practice and thus may need critic’s assistance for improvement theory-wise.
