Abstract


The modern society has undergone dramatic changes with political campaigns rising one after another. China’s new-type of universities were born in this very period, in order to carry out the evolution of china’s social system from feudalism to a new social system. Nanjing University of the Arts was established under this background, followed by growth that continues to this day. The history of Nanjing Arts Institute can be traced back to the year of 1912 when Mr. Liu Haisu set up Shanghai Chinese Art College. After a century of development and construction, during which the school has underwent trials and tribulations, Nanjing Arts Institute has now become a comprehensive higher educational institution of arts. As the‘face’of this University and reflection of its history, the school gate undertakes an important role. Meanwhile, after changes for several times as time goes, it has also become a direct mapping to the culture of China’s modern society. According to the history of Nanjing Arts Institute, this paper will look into the change of school gate from three periods, that is, startup period, combining period and development period. For each period, we will discuss from three perspectives: first is the historical background, second is the status of the university and change of its gate, third are the characteristics and origin analysis. In the end we will summarize the change and features of the school gate over the century, get the conclusion that‘constant changing’spirit contained in the gate change over the past century will provide great enlightenment to the current gate design.
