Abstract


The English Patient depicts the sufferings of the colonized exquisitely with the tendency to be against colonialism and imperialism. The thesis explores the subjectivity of the colonized from the postcolonial point of view: the reason why the colonized lose their subjectivity, the consequences caused by losing subjectivity as well as the way of returning to subjectivity. The colonists distort the fact by means of such epistemic violence as the colonial education, rewriting of history and scientific expedition etc, so that the colonized are blind to serve the metropolis. What’s more, the harm on body and soul of the colonized causes their psychological horror to the colonial ruling. The two factors combine to the loss of the subjectivity, which shows on four aspects, that is, ambiguity of cognition, abandonment of authentic culture, absence of voice coupled with loss of resistance. However, the loss of subjectivity is temporary. Once the colonized despair of the metropolis, they will set foot on the way to search for subjectivity. On the one hand, the colonized reinterpret the nature of colonialism and attack the epistemic violence; on the other hand, they recreate their image. Finally, the colonized rediscover their subjectivity and grow into free, independent, autonomous and sound entities.
