Abstract


As the scriptures, the thoughts of《Platform Sutra》can be summarized as:Buddha-hood, namely "once you realize your own heart, you will become Buddha" (jixinjifo); cultivation viewpoint, "sudden realization and become a man of virtue" (dunwuchengfo); and emancipation standpoint, say "Achieving enlightenment through one’s own endeavor" (zixingzidu).《Study on the Ethics of<Platform Sutra>》will probe into《Platform Sutra》’s ethics thoughts mainly from the aspects of Buddha-hood, moral realm, moral cultivation, and secularization of Zen and Buddhism.Hui Neng advocated "all human being has Buddha nature", which adapt the abstract Buddha nature of India Buddha to human nature and nature of mind. Besides, he encouraged"human nature is voidness"、"once you realized your own heart, you would became Buddha", and taught people to recognize their own nature that is the result. Hui Neng’s theory indicated that people had the internal possibility of moral cultivation. The key to became Buddha is confusion and realization. "If someone’s nature was sheltered with secularity, he/she will always be moral; but when he/she realize his/her own nature, he/she will be Buddha", which attributes the key to become Buddha to people’s internal factors, and reveals human being’s intrinsic value.On the basis of Buddha-hood,《platform sutra》advocates the moral realm, such as, Parinibbana、act with compassion in every facet of life、voidness. Parinibbana closes to Nirwana, that is everything ends in voidness. Viodness is the judge from Buddhism to cosmic inventory. Since comic inventory is viodness, human nature is viodness.《<Platform sutra>》explains viodness with the thoughts of Nakamichi, which embodying in "without the concept of mind"、"without appearance"、"without persistence". Besides, Extend by viodness, we can understand "exceeding good and bad" (feishanfei’e) of Zen. Nan-Master Zen led its disciples to vow, and had sympathy for all beings. It emphasized voidness, and hoped people not be sticklers for all the appearance. We should cultivate ourselves with great concentration, which will lead us to nirvana and achieve the value of our life.To achieve the goal,《platform sutra》puts forward some methods, such as, "meditation and wisdom come to play at the same time" (dinghuiyiti)、"achieving enlightenment through one’s own endeavor" " sudden realization and become a man of virtue", ect. Hui Neng opposed to separate meditation and wisdom, they two are one;"Achieving enlightenment through one’s own endeavor"emphasized consciousness of moral, people should improve their moral cultivation on their own initiative, rather than rely on moral education; "sudden realization" advocated instant understanding. There is no difference in Buddha dharma, but have differences between different people.《Platform sutra》considers human’s own heart to be the basis of being Buddha. The difference between Buddha and mortal is "confusion or realization", so Hui Neng said:"Buddha dharma is in the life",and encouraged people to cultivate themselves in daily life, and gained liberation.
