Abstract


Chinese ZhiMa, with a very long history, is a black and white woodcut print arising from the Tang Dynasty. It is the originator of the folk print and the source of the Chinese Spring Festival Picture. It once was the most extensive and rustic art of print. While Japanese Ema is a colorful woodcut produced in Nara Period, which is a-small wood can have desires and wishes written on and then placed in front of the God statue for the their blessing. The emergence and development of Japanese Ema has complicated connection with the development of Chinese Zhima. The similarities and differences of traditional art, fold custom and religious belief between China and Japan can be concluded from the research on the historical resourcing, characteristics of art, the development status.Chinese Zhima and Japanese Ema are a form of art with customs, religions and art mixed up. Each contains rich value of ethnic and folk art, but with different fate. China Zhima is on the verge of extinction, while Japanese Ema gets good protection and inheritance, even unified with modern design and appears to meet modern aesthetics as an innovative form. Chinese ZhiMa and Japanese Ema, as closely-related and culturally-distinguished phenomenon of traditional art between two countries, are of great significance for us to study the traditional art, folk beliefs and religious values. For Chinaese cultural heritage protection and inheritance, Japanese successes in the traditional culture promoting, traditional craft protecting and developing worth our reference and study.
