Abstract

With the publication of New Senior English Curriculum Standard, there is a higher request for all high school English learners. In the new standard, there is a definite demand for extensive reading’s amount, which points out that students should read more than 190,000 words except words in textbooks during high school study. (level 6, the basic level every high school student should reach) With limited time in high school teaching, how to carry out the extensive reading activities has always been a headache question for every English teacher. They have two main viewpoints. Some think that traditional reading exercises, like ones in the examination are good materials to be used in the extensive reading activity. Because it has a clear direction for improving the reading comprehension mark in the examinations, while others think that more attempts should be done in dealing with the extensive reading, for example, reading the English magazines, which are much easier to arouse students’reading interests.This dissertation attempts to solve this puzzling issue and find out which method is better for improving the reading competence and furthermore the all-round English competence of high school students. An experiment has been designed in the research, the basic steps of which are as follows. The experiment selects 30 students with the similar English level respectively from two classes, while they have been divided them into Group A and Group B and given a pre-experiment testing. In group A, an English magazine is used as extensive reading material. The popular magazine“Crazy English Teens”has been chosen. In group B, the traditional reading exercises are used as extensive reading material. The selected extensive reading material is the book“Elite English Reading Testing Every week”. After ten weeks, the two groups are tested by another test paper.A research on the comparative analysis of the two test results is done by analyzing the test scores. Finally, a conclusion is reached. And some further consideration about the teaching of extensive reading is also demonstrated.The dissertation contains seven parts. Part1: Introduction of research background, question, value, method and whole structure of this dissertation. Part2: Theoretical basis on reading, including the definition of reading & extensive reading, the relationship between extensive reading and intensive reading, the features of extensive reading, the task and aim of extensive reading exercises. Part3: Theories on the evaluation of English reading materials. Part4: Ontology research of Elite English Reading Testing Every Week. Part5: Ontology research of Crazy English Teens, including the brief introduction of magazine, language features, and its relation with English teaching. Part6: The comparative study of Elite English Reading Testing Every Week and Crazy English Teens as extensive reading material. It explains experimental design, analyzes experimental data, and attempts to conclude main findings. Part7: Conclusion. It makes a conclusion on the selection of English extensive reading material. Besides, it also put forward some consideration about the limitation of this experiment design and the enlightenment this experiment brings to the teaching of English extensive reading.The research has advanced some valuable suggestions and methods for the English teachers puzzled by how to design extensive reading class. The purpose is to enrich teaching practice of extensive reading, do some contribution to the theoretical research of extensive reading teaching, and offer some references for English teachers when they need to choose and evaluate learning aided materials.
