Abstract

Because Advanced English is an important course for English majors, more and more importance has been attached to it during these years. That’s why many researches have been done on the subject. But most of them focus on theoretical research. As science and technology have been developing continuously and cultural communication becomes more and more sophisticated, several scholars and researchers have done researches on computer-assisted Advanced English teaching and cultural teaching in Advanced English. Since it is a course in China, no research has been done on it abroad. But a lot of researches have been done on culture and language teaching as well as computer-assisted language teaching. In view of these objective facts, in this thesis, the author aims to combine the two aspects together and find a model of computer-assisted cultural infiltration in Advanced English teaching.In order to prove the experimental computer-assisted cultural infiltration method feasible and effective, under her supervisor’s guidance, the author did a series of researches and interviews on 68 English majors (34 accepted experimental teaching method and the other accepted traditional teaching method) with the same English proficiency in Grade 2007 in Foreign Language College of Wuhan University of Science and Technology. The same survey was done twice from September 2009 to September 2010 in the same two classes before and after learning the text respectively. In the process of experiment, the researcher often listened to the lesson to observe the students reaction in the class. In addition, after learning the course, namely in September, 2010, the author also interviewed the teacher and the students in the experimental class to get a clear idea of the students’attitude and true feelings towards such teaching model. Of course, all the data were collected from the questionnaire and the interviews of the teacher and the students.After collecting data, the author did qualitative and quantitative analyses of them and got the following findings: (1) After learning Advanced English, the students made greater progress in cultural understanding in the experimental class than the students in the control class; (2) Computer-assisted cultural infiltration in Advanced English changed the students’learning process. Because computer-assisted cultural infiltration in Advanced English provided adequate and vivid information for the students, they could learn more cultural knowledge. As computer-assisted cultural infiltration needed more interaction, the teacher often assigned homework for them to finish on internet. In the long run, the students may find it interesting to get so much vivid information on the Internet; they finally became interested in learning culture this way. Therefore, at last they were willing to learn the culture by themselves and showed positive attitude towards this course.In a word, the experimental cultural infiltration teaching method designed by the author turned out to be effective through comparing the analyses of the results between the students’final performances in the two classes. The writer hopes this research can provide reference for the teachers and students concerning Advanced English. For teachers, they should pay attention to the integration of network resources and cultural infiltration in Advanced English teaching; for the students, they should also learn to make full use of the network resources to learn culture independently. Only they all do as it, the students can understand the culture deeply and thus the ultimate goal of Advanced English teaching can be realized.
