Abstract


China has a long history of about 5000 years. Over the years, Chinese government, venture capital companies and firms owners have together helped the economy to progress tremendously. China s Gross Domestic Products (GDP) overtook Japan and is ranked world number 2 now. Although China s economy had improved tremendously, her people are still largely poor. By world standard, China is still considered a developing nation. China is still today the world factory, producing factory goods to be exported throughout the world. From the value-chain perspective, factory goods are considered low value. If China is to close its gap with the rest of the developed nations, it needs to shift focus from being a low value producing nation to that of a high value producing nation and the ideal strategy is to develop high end technology. Although technology can create higher value and return, it nonetheless comes with higher risk and investment as well. As it is not appropriate for China to invest its people monies in risky projects, thus the only ideal way is to use venture capital monies and direct them to the right industry. Because the Chinese government has had put a lot of efforts in developing its venture capital industry, we are seeing more and more foreign venture capital firms setting foot in China. Government-lead funds are being set-up to help align resources to the right places. Many incentive plans are also being introduced. Although venture capital industry in China is about 25 years old, we are still not seeing the level of success it should be. This is due to ineffective laws and policy being put in place, and the fact that there is a tremendous lack of talents to help develop this industry. This thesis use Porter s PESTEL and SWOT analysis to analyze China s strengths and weaknesses in developing its venture capital industry. From a macro and micro analysis of the China venture capital industry, this thesis will draw some recommendations for the government moving forwards.
