Abstract

After four decades of development, thermosensitive polymers have been made great progress in controlling the phase separation temperature. Now, people can roughly design or synthesize thermosensitive polymers of a specific cloud point through a variety of ways. However, the research mainly focused on PNIPAAm, there were few reports about other thermosensitive polymers. And most methods of controlling cloud points were copolymerization with another hydrophilic/hydrophobic monomer. Based on the above considerations, we use a supramolecular approach to control the cloud point of thermosensitive polymer solution with CDs as additives.Firstly, we synthesized PDMAEMA with different molecular weights by radical polymerization. We studied on the influence of molecular weight, concentration and pH on cloud point of PDMAEMA solutions. The increase in molecular weight and concentration both caused a decline in cloud points. Changing pH value also affected the cloud point, because of the different protonated degree of PDMAEMA side chains.Secondly, we select the standard borate buffer solution (pH = 9.18) as the test environment. We studied the influence of addition of RM-β-CD on cloud point of PDMAEMA solutions, and made comparison to addition ofα-CD,β-CD,γ-CD. Addition of RM-β-CD made the cloud point of PDMAEMA solutions gradually increase, and it is caused by inclusion complexation between RM-β-CD and PDMAEMA that was confirmed by the 1D NOE and 2D NOESY measurements. The influence of addition ofβ-CD is similar to that of RM-β-CD, but addition ofα-CD andγ-CD had no effect. The inclusion stoichiometry of RM-β-CD and PDMAEMA equals 1, which was determined by Job’s method. Finally, we systematically studied the influence of addition of different amounts of RM-β-CD on the cloud points of PDMAEMA solutions. Based on appropriate assumptions, we obtained the equation that described a relationship between inclusion complexation and cloud point. We used the equation to fit the experimental data. We obtained inclusion constant Keq and Tc0.
