Abstract


In the protection of historical cities, especially the protection of historical and cultural city, the most important thing is to protect the historic districts and preserve the city’s fabric, which is considered by the historical heritage protection researchers, architects, urban planner and other professional experts and scholars. But in China’s economic construction and the accelerating process of urbanization, a series of new problems about protection of update mode and the concepts and methods of the historic districts.This dissertation studies the concept of integrated conservation of historic districts and methods, taking the design of the Historic Districts in Shaoyang City for a case study, and discusses how to make historic district a sustainable overall protection in today’s rapid urbanization processBefore the study of the overall concepts of Historic Districts and methods of protection and the protection of update mode question, this dissertation describes the concept and features of historic district, so that people can have a general understanding about historic districts. Then, the related concepts of protecting historic districts were discussed, to make people know the protections of the historic districts in general, laying the groundwork for the following discussion about concepts and methods of historic districts.Based on the above, the author then discusses the concept of the Historic Districts and methods of protecting in six parts, including the buildings in the street, the street pattern, control of building height and scale of infrastructure reconstruction, the residential population and adjustment about mode of living, the adjustments of block functions and feature. And then the theories about protecting the historic district were discussed, proposed fives related theories including the significance of cultural ecology, cultural diversity conservation, sustainable development theory, energy theory, and organic renewal theory. All of these discussions provide a theoretical basis for the following research about update mode of Historic Districts. The author explored four different update modes of the Historic Districts:the original true type protection, style-type protection, reproduction-based protection, and innovative protection. The author proposed different modes have different characteristics and should be applied for different types of historic districts.In last part of dissertation, the author presided the design of the Historic Districts in Shaoyang City for example, discusses the concepts and methods of protection and the protection of update mode used in the protection of the Historic Districts in Shaoyang City, to prove the theories discussed in previous research with example, integrating theory with practice to fully explain the issues raised by the author.
