Abstract


Since the failure of the Opium War and the encroachment of foreign powers in 1850s, China was gradually reduced to the status of a semi-colonial and semi-feudal country. And the Chinese society was changed to a great extent, which was especially manifested in the coastal defense. Thus the Chinese people turned their eyesight from the land to the ocean for the very first time and began their long and hard way of exploring the modern coastal defense construction.China abided by the traditional coastal defense thought before the Opium War, which was mainly embodied in the ideas of the backward navy construction and the sea prohibition. At the beginning of the Opium War, most officials of Qing dynasty advocate the strategy of war on land instead of on water. After the losing of many battles, the officials of The Qing dynasty gradually renewed their view of the coastal defense to set defense in the coastal cities and maintained the land defense at the same time. The failure of the Opium War promoted the awakening of the Qing dynasty to some extent and led Qing to reevaluate the coastal defense strategy. From the emperor down to the common intellectuals, all Chinese began to reflect on the modern Chinese coastal defense and proposed many different strategies of coastal defense. Yet it is regretful that the traditional coastal defense thought had not been fundamentally changed, since the sea defense construction received no sustained development after the War.This dissertation, through the study of the characteristics of Chinese sea defense thought before and after the Opium War, The Qing’s General’s rough thought over it and the drawbacks of modern Chinese sea defense, attempts to explore the problems in the beginning and development of the Chinese coastal defense in modern times and analyze the modern coastal defense thought, thus enlightens the way to value and strengthen our coastal defense in a world full of keen arms race.
