College Students’ Attitude Towards Seeking for Professional Psychological Help and Its Relationship with Social Support

Abstract


As the popularization of mental health information, people are having more knowledge of psychology and counseling. However, there are also certain part of people who has psychological problems refuse to seek for professional psychological help, which related to people’s attitude toward seeking for professional psychological help.This study takes 220 college students from Sichuan Normal University, Sichuan University, University of Electronic Science and Technique and Sichuan Tianyi College as research object, using the revised Chinese edition of Attitude Towards Seeking Professional Psychological Help (ATPPSH) questionnaire made by Fischer and Turner in 1970 and Social Support Rating Scale (SSRS) made by Xiao Shuiyuan (1993) to research on the situation of college students’attitude toward seeking professional help and social support, and the correlation between them. The result of the research found:(1) College students’attitude towards seeking professional psychological help shows differences on gender, grade and major. Female students’attitude toward seeking help is more positive than male students(p<0.001); freshmen and sophomores are more positive than seniors, and seniors have the lowest attitude compare with freshmen, sophomores, juniors and graduate students(F<0.001); Students study art are more positive than who study science(p<0.001);(2)College students’social support shows differences on gender, grade major and origin. Female students get more social support than male students(p<0.01); freshmen and sophomores get more social support than senior students and graduate students(F<0.01); Students study art get more social support than students study science(p<0.05); Students from city get more social support than students from countryside(p<0.05).(3)College students’behavior of seeking professional psychological help show positive correlation with their social support(p<0.05) and attitude toward seeking professional psychological help(p<0.01);(4)College students’attitude toward seeking professional psychological help shows significant positive correlation with their social support(p<0.01);(5)College students’social support may forecast their attitude toward seeking professional psychological help(p<0.001).
