Abstract


Abstract Objective: in assessing the effects of on-the-scene intervention in prevention and control of STDs & AIDS on students of civilian-run higher education institutions, this research paper is intended to provide evidence of implementing an intervention mode and enacting related policies against Sexually Transmitted Diseases (STD) and Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome (AIDS) among students at civilian-run higher education institutions with the purpose of effectively keeping the transmission of STDs & AIDS in check.Methods: three civilian-run higher education institutions, among all eight in Nanchang City, were randomly selected, whose students were intervened by a package of various means: companion education, workshop, prize-earning article-soliciting, know-how quiz, and theme entertainment. A total of 1077 students participated in the investigation and the sample were randomly selected and enquired before and after the intervention.Results: The package of intervention measures against STD & AIDS, featured companion education, is applicable to the students of civilian-run higher education institutions. Among the post-intervention students, compared with the ante-intervention, the cognition rate of AIDS-related knowledge rose from 70.6% to 83.7% (P<0.001); the awareness percentage of the top ten AIDS-related knowledge most publicized in the state came up from 79.6% to 91.3% (P<0.001); and the average awareness rate of two relevant state policies rose from 40.7% to 64.1% (P<0.001); the cognition rate of the top four STDs climbed from 56.2% to 76.8% (P<0.001); the awareness percentage of five STDs-related diseases was up from 65.6% to 78.8% (P<0.001), the rate of positive attitude towards the five STDs and AIDS reached 65.2% from 53.3% (P<0.001); the rate of condom-use in heterosexuality increased significantly (P<0.05); there was no significant difference in use of condom in homosexuality (P>0.05).Conclusions: The package of intervention measures, namely, companion education, workshop, prize-earning article-soliciting, know-how quiz, and theme entertainment, which has significantly changed the knowledge, attitude, belief and practice of the students towards STDs & AIDS, indicated its practicability and potentials. Students at higher education institutions are sexually active and quite malleable. The institutions and communities should pay more attention to this issue and facilitate their full access to adequate education on STDs & AIDS, which is of utmost importance to curb the transmission of these diseases.
