Abstract


In the studies of Second Language Acquisition, listening has aroused great concern among researchers and language teachers due to its important function in the intake of language. A great number of studies have confirmed that second language (L2) listening comprehension is a complex process, and it is crucial in the development of second language competence. Yet most of the research in China mainly focuses on the study of listening procedure and on the various macro- and micro- listening skills by which a better performance on listening comprehension could be achieved. This thesis attempts to explore difficulties in college students’listening comprehension and the usage of strategies in listening comprehension, from a cognitive perspective, so as to provide suggestions on how to improve English listening comprehension instruction in China.The thesis takes information-processing theories, schema theory, and relevance theory as the framework, introduces psychological and physiological factors affecting listening comprehension, and gives reviews on listening comprehension difficulties and strategies both at home and abroad. By mainly conducting quantitative method with questionnaires and qualitative method with introspective reports, and analyzing the data by SPSS10.0, some findings are gained concerning the difficulties and strategies used in the participants’listening comprehension. The study shows that the following four difficulties are considered the biggest obstacles in listening comprehension: 1) Neglecting of the next part when thinking about meaning; 2) Grasping limited vocabulary, especially terms and idioms; 3) Quickly forgetting what has been heard previously; and 4) Poor concentration over a prolonged period resulting in absent-mindedness. The survey on the application of listening comprehension strategies shows that students prefer to use prediction, elaboration, transfer and imaging during listening comprehension; the effective listeners use listening strategies more frequently; different students use different listening strategies. Based on the research findings on cognitive styles of Chinese college students, this thesis concludes with practical implication in listening teaching on the purpose of improving second language learning and teaching by enhancing listening comprehension strategy training.
