Abstract


Irony is one of the oldest concept in Western Literary Theory, and it is also a elusory concept to people. As time goes by, the concept of irony is corrected and expended ceaselessly. The form makes us dizzy. Irony is not only a rhetorical form but also a kind of narrative strategy and narrative structure of art; it can be used as a principle of literary inditement and a kind of format can be expressed to cognize the world and construct the art world.In the Chinese and foreign literary practice, the irony for the well-known writers, whether or not narrative statements, many writers use all kinds of irony self-taught, use this word express another meaning and the surface behind the rhetoric has put a wealth of deeply meaning words, the two sides of one word make a mockery of the emergence of a type of contrast. Irony has some characters of euphemistic, profound and sapid in the narration, shaping the characters, showing the author’s emotional attitude, therefore, more and more persons pay attention to irony. This rhetorical technique is considered“rhetorical devices should be depended upon all the literatures and poetries and has universal validity." In fact, nowadays the irony is still a developing technique and theory, irony used widely in literary discourse, it has became a cultural phenomenon rather meaningless.This paper studies narrative irony, through study of cultural backgrounds were created by narrative irony, and the irony of the Western theory of system, to reveals the meaning of an ironic narrative, the basic characteristics and nature. Through the combination of irony and narratology, we analyze the ironic narrative form systematically and conclusion the disadvantage and advantage between an ironic narrative.The main thesis is divided into three parts:Firstly, according to the effect of different development, we introduce systematically the process of Western ironic theory from rhetoric, inditement and unaided ideology of poetry.Secondly, abstract the definition of narrative irony, basic characters and nature. It is a dynamic and developing concept which contains three characters of irony. They are euphemistic description author’s mind and the factors of estrangement and opposite.Thirdly, according to the differentness of narrative form of irony, we can classify three aspects which are ironic language, ironic circumstances and ironic style, then analyze the method of ironic narration with representative literature opus.This thesis shows a more complete“narrative irony”and grasp this definition systematically and rationally.
