Abstract

In the foreign language learning process, the spelling is always a very important but so that beginners, especially children difficult task. Many studies have shown that the level of spelling accuracy rate has a very close relationship with phonological awareness. However, different researchers for the study of the relationship between the different levels of phonological awareness test tasks spelling ability is not the same. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to explore the five Chinese primary school English phonological awareness tasks - rhyme, singular detection, synthesis, segmentation and phoneme manipulation of their spelling ability. This paper consists of six parts. The first part describes the research background, significance, purpose and research questions. The second part of the literature review, phonological awareness, the study of the relationship between spelling and both do a detailed overview. The third part is a theoretical framework, Chard and Dickson (1999) theory of the progressive development of phonological awareness, spelling phonological awareness Adams (1990) five-stage development model and Gentry (1982) proposed five-stage development said. The fourth section details The study involved subjects, experimental materials, and the entire experimental process. Representing the four upper grades 24 subjects for the experiment to provide valid data. Test of phonological awareness tool Cassady et al in 2005 to establish a computer-based the standard phonological awareness test software, that SAPA. The spelling test tools for PSI (Words Their Way, 2008). The fifth part of the experimental results and discussion. SPSS16.0 descriptive statistical analysis of the resulting data, correlation analysis and stepwise regression analysis. The sixth part of the research results show that: 1) the singularity detection performance of the task of the students in each grade better than rhyme, synthesis, segmentation and phoneme manipulation tasks. Phonological awareness overall rising trend; 2) presents a rising trend of students in each grade spelling ability. Most of the students in spelling began early letter name stage. 3) students' phonological awareness and spelling exists a significant positive correlation. Correlation between phonological awareness five dispersed task and spelling ability increased with increasing student grades. Five tasks, rhyme and singular detection task and spelling were significantly correlated. Further analysis of the data show: fourteen sub-tasks, rhyme applications, singularity detection tasks - tail and middle tone and phoneme segmentation tasks spelling was significant; phonological awareness and consonants Last consonants and consonant clusters of diphones item spelling feature task were significantly correlated. Stepwise regression analysis of spelling ability with five decentralized task: the rhyme task of fourth grade spelling; students of the upper grades of spelling rhyme with singular detection task.
