Abstract


As an important part in translation, literary translation theory attracts many people’s attention. Translators both in China and the West advanced literary translation criteria, which are the guiding lines in translating activities and the yardstick in the translation assessment as well. This paper attempts to discover the criteria used in translation contests by analyzing the source texts, the translation, and the comments on the translation in the Contest of Han Suyin Youth Award for Translation.The Contest of Han Suyin Youth Award for Translation, organized by Chinese Translators Journal, is an important event in the translation field in China. It is the first of its kind, the most comprehensive and most influential translation competition in China and attracts a great number of contestants every year. It exerts a great influence on Chinese translation practice. The source texts of the contests bear the characteristics of being varied in literary genres including mainly prose and novel, being rich in style, different in linguistic features and covering a wide range of fields. Experts in translation offer comments on every contest and provide one version for reference too. In the comments the common mistakes made by the contestants are demonstrated with reasons for them analyzed. The factors that experts concern in the process of translation are comprehensive, including language, style and culture.In their comments, the experts sometimes mentioned the translation criteria they followed. In other cases, they did not simply tell us what translation criteria they followed but we can also know it by analyzing it, that is to say, we can know the translation criteria that the experts follow by analyzing the comments and the reference they offer. By analyzing each comment and reference version, we can realize the translation criteria they follow and then figure about their frequency of usage. By finding their common points and classifying, we can come to the conclusion that faithfulness and expressiveness are the most commonly used criteria in translation contests based on the Contest of Han Suyin Youth Award for Translation.
