With the improvement of socio-economic conditions and oral health literacy, people have a more comprehensive understanding of the malocclusion. The number of adult patients who turn to orthodontics for better aesthetics and function increases. However, the treatments between adults and teenagers are quite different, because aging dental diseases such as dental caries、periodontal diseases and tooth loss are so more often shown in adults, with the later two the major causes of alveolar bone atrophy. Alveolar bone atrophy is mainly manifested in the reduction of alveolar ridge height and narrow of the width, especially in narrowing the width, which often makes root bucco-lingual width of the adjacent teeth greater than that of the atrophic alveolar bone. Because atrophic alveolar bone can not afford orthodontic movement of adjacent teeth to close the missing gap, patients often need denture after orthodontic treatment, which is reluctant for orthodontic patients and physicians to accept. Therefore, whether the teeth can move in the atrophic alveolar bone, as well as how to make such a move closer to its movement in the healthy alveolar bone are faced and to be resolved in adult orthodontics. As the existence of ethical issues in medicine, the clinical alveolar bone atrophy and related experiments can not be implemented in the patient’s mouth, so animal models are used to resolve this problem.PurposeTo establish experimental animal models of tooth movement and lay the foundation for the relevant experiments such as the ability of the adjacent teeth moving in the atrophic alveolar bone as well as the effect of this movement on the alveolar bone height and width.Methods12 pure male Beagle dogs were selected and implemented general anesthesia by SumianxinⅡand ketamine hydrochloride injection. After preparation of dentition model and the extraction of the second premolar teeth in both sides, turned mucoperiosteal flap of experimental side, grinded cortical bone and some spongy bone, simulated atrophy alveolar ridge after tooth extraction. Making casting metal full crown with the lingual side of square tube sized 0.019×0.025 inch of cuspids, the third premolar teeth and fourth premolar teeth on the model as correction device, using 0.019×0.025 inch stainless steel square wire bending as guide devices of tooth movement, bonding the appliances to the teeth of the experimental dogs with the zinc polycarboxylate cement. Nickel titanium tension spring as force source(100g/ side), moving forward the third premolar, referral once a month and observe the tooth movement and the responses of alveolar bone. Observe the appliance situation once a day to see whether there is missing, deformation or damage.ResultsThe CT inspection shows that the bone width of tooth missing area is smaller than the third premolar in buccolingual diameter width and tooth movement animal model in atrophic alveolar bone of Beagle dogs has been established. All the animals tolerated the whole process of experiment and all the appliance sides howed good retention, with no fall off or deformation of the device and the guidance device stainless steel square wire bending showed no deformation or damage. The appliance can fully meet the requirement of experiment.ConclusionsIn this study, experimental animal model of the tooth movement in the atrophic alveolar bone was successfully established, suppling an experimental basis for the follow-up researches.
