Association of Cigarete Smoking with Lower Urinary Trac Symptoms: Results from the Fang Cheng Males Health Survey

Abstract


Objective To investigate the association of cigarette smoking with lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS) in middle-aged men.Materials and Methods Using the international prostate symptom score (IPSS) and Health Survey questionnaire,studies were conducted on 1,387 men in FangCheng Area who are older than 40 and all of them were asked to complete the questionnaire about the lower urinary tract symptoms and smoking when they went to medical checkup. Information was collected including age, smoking, height, weight, hypertension, disease history and recent medication and so on. The association between lower urinary tract symptoms and smoking was analyzed using chi-square test、spearman correlation analysis and Binary logistic regression models.Results:There were 1,271 samples in our study,including 616 nonsmokers(48.5%) and 655 smokers(51.5%). On Binary logistic regression analysis, age was independently associated with an increased risk of moderate to severe LUTS (OR=1.442; 95% CI:1.183,1.785;P=0.000). No significant difference was observed in the distribution of LUTS (P=0.509) between smokers and nonsmokers,the quantities of cigarettes smoked per day didn’t affect symptoms of the LUTS (P= 0.424), and the years of smoking also had no influence on the symptoms of the LUTS (P= 0.150).In present study, we couldn’t conclude the increased risk between smoking and moderate to severe LUTS (OR =1.032；95％CI:0.719,1.481；P=0.886),and we also couldn’t conclude the increased risk between smoking and moderate to severe irritation symptoms(OR =0.965；95％CI:0.683,1.365；P=0.841)or moderate to severe obstructive symptoms(OR=0.968；95％CI:0.657,1.425；P=0.869).Conclusion Smokers and nonsmokers pose the same distribution of LUTS,the quantities and years of smoking does not affect the development of LUTS,the age is independently associated with an increased risk of moderate to severe LUTS.
