Abstract


As we know, Chinese is a language which is in the strict sense lack of morphological signs and changes, so function words are important means of expressing grammatical meaning in Chinese and they also play important roles in Chinese grammar. And as the most important and the largest number of function words, the use of adverbs is complicated and it is used most frequently. In that case, the research into adverbs is of great importance to the research on history of Chinese grammar.This thesis focuses on eight series of Bamboo Slips of the Qin Dynasty, and demonstrates a closed and comprehensive analysis of the adverbs on them, in the hope of finding out the usage and development of adverbs from the end of the Warring States Period to Qin Dynasty, in order to provide reliable evidence for the research on function words and grammar of ancient manuscripts to promote the research on language of ancient manuscripts and the research on the development of history of Chinese grammar.This thesis is divided into nine chapters. Chapter 1 is the introduction, which consists of the significance, used materials and literature review. Also in this chapter, according to meaning and function of adverbs on Bamboo Slips of the Qin Dynasty, the thesis divides them into:adverbs of time, adverbs of degree, adverbs of scope, adverbs of frequency, adverbs of negation, adverbs of mood and adverbs of emotion, which can also be subdivided. Chapter 2 to Chapter 8 are the main parts of this thesis. In these seven chapters, the thesis describes and analyzes each kind of adverbs comprehensively and systematically. Apart from that, the thesis examines and analyzes the usage of each kind of adverbs, and also summarizes the grammatical function and characteristics of each kind of adverbs with the methods of quantitative analysis and statistics. Chapter 9 is a summary of adverbs on Bamboo Slips of the Qin Dynasty, concluding the overview, the usage of different adverbs, the usage of monosyllabic and polysyllabic adverbs and also the grammatical characteristics of adverbs on Bamboo Slips of the Qin Dynasty.
