Abstract


Imagery has been proved by a large number of studies that it can reflect one’s mental state, relief bad emotion and cure psychological abnormalities. Animal imagery, which received a lot of human projection and closely connected to the instinct level, contains a wealth of symbols and is easy for expression and communication. At present, the empirical research of imagery is quite limited both at home and abroad. This study attempts to use empirical methods to explore the courses’ animal imagery of the third-year junior high school students and the relationship between the imageries and course scores. And based on this empirical study, taking math anxiety as a starting point, group trainings of animal drawing were conducted to relief the participants’math anxiety, hopefully to improve their math scores. It turns out that the top five animal imageries selected by the third-year junior high school students were cat, dog, tiger, rabbit and monkey; the top five of high score group were dog, cat, rabbit, monkey and bird, while those of low score group were tiger, cat, dog, lion and panda. Students with higher score were more likely to select dog and monkey, while those with lower score were more likely to select tiger, snake and rat. The high score group members were more likely to select dog, bird and monkey than those in low score group, and the low score group members were more likely to select tiger, snake and rat. According to the descriptions and attitudes of some animals of the junior high school students, these animals were divided into three categories, intelligent & lovely type, unwieldy & docile type, agile & vicious type. Students with higher score were more likely to select intelligent & lovely animal imageries, while those with lower score were more likely to select unwieldy & docile and agile & vicious animal imageries. The animal imageries of science related courses were more in intelligent & lovely type, and those of art related courses were more in unwieldy & docile type. The results of animal drawing group training indicated that the group members released their math anxiety and got group support during the training, which brought down their scores of math anxiety.
