Abstract


Jack Kerouac is a prominent writer in American literature’s history. Comparing with the flourishing studies about him of the West, academic studies on Kerouac in China are still in the infant stage. Taking the angle of truthfulness and finctionality with application of closed reading method and general study method, the dissertation discusses the constitution and characteristic of the memory world in Kerouac’s Duluoz Legend, and tries to re-establish Kerouac’s literature status. This dissertation contains six chapters. Chapter one summarizes the academic studies of Jack Kerouac home and aboard and suggests the necessity of taking a fresh look at Kerouac’s narrative works as a whole. Based on the relationship of author and works, Chapter two analyzes the source and constitution of Duluoz Legend by taking memory as a keyword. Referring to Kerouac’s literacy concept and writing career, chapter three explores the truthfulness and finctionality in the works, revealing that feelings is the only standard to judge its authenticity. Chapter four analyzes the Spontaneous Prose Method of Kerouac, which is based on the sound and effect of oral English, suggesting that sound is the key of reconstruction of literature truthfulness. Chapter five re-evaluates Kerouac’s status, contribution and value in literature. Chapter six is concluding remarks of the dissertation.
