Abstract

Objective: To investigate the association between the loss or gain of sex chromosomes and the pathologic grade as well as clinical stage of male clear cell renal cell carcinoma (ccRCC) in male patients. Methods:20 cases of male ccRCC were grouped according to the Fuhrman grade and clinical phase . 5 cases of normal kidney with severe traumatic injury were selected as control. Using fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) with sex chromosome-specific DNA probes, the copy number of chromosomes X and Y in interphase nuclei were detected. Results: The percentage of cells with gain of the sex chromosomes in tumor was significantly higher than that was in normal tissue and peripheral areas of tumor, and the cells with gain of chromosomes X and Y were increasing when the risk of renal cell carcinoma rised; besides, cells in advanced clear cell renal cell carcinoma were more prone to have sex chromosomes gained. Conclusions: This study demonstrates that it is gain rather than loss of the X and Y chromosomes correlates with tumor stage and pathologic grade of male clear cell renal cell carcinoma.
