Abstract


Based on large-scale corpus of mandarin dialogues, this research adopt residual analysis and predictive modeling to investigate the phonetic in Mandarin. The content of this thesis can be divided into two main parts, i.e., the analysis of duration and the analysis of pitch. Specifically, duration analysis mainly covers the aspects of pause distribution and silence duration, and also the analysis of duration pattern of various types of consonant and vowel, through which to further study the relationship between prosodic structures and the above mentioned items. Results of experiments have shown that prosodic structures exhibited strong relativity with pause distribution and types of vowel duration variations, while it had weak relativity with different types of consonant duration variations. In regard with pitch analysis, it mainly investigates the pitch declination and pitch reset, and the conditions for restricting the appearance of the two phenomena. The present study proposes that pitch declination usually exists in major prosodic units, pitch reset often exists across major prosodic boundaries. Through this research, we observe that, for minor prosodic boundaries such as syllable boundary (B0)、prosodic word boundary (B1) and major prosodic boundaries such as intonation word (B3)、utterance boundary (B4),they have obvious distinction from each other in phonetic characteristic. However, it is difficult to distinguish B2 and B1 by current corpus and its annotation. The reason may be two-fold: (i) the study may not find the significant characteristics to distinguish prosodic boundaries, and (ii) the annotation result shows much un-consistency in prosodic boundaries. Hence, we propose that the clues for distinguishing prosodic boundaries and the basis for annotation are still worth to study.
