The Relationship between p53 Expression and Prognosis in 84 Cases of Nasopharyngeal Carcinomas

Abstract


Objective: To follow-up study of clinical cases observed 84 patients with nasopharyngeal carcinoma patients with long-term survival after 5 years of treatment , local recurrence , distant metastasis and complication rate of nasopharyngeal carcinoma p53 protein expression and the biological behavior and clinical outcomes . Methods: The initial treatment in our department from June 2001 to August 2002 , with complete clinical and pathological data of 84 cases of nasopharyngeal carcinoma , all patients prior to the first treatment with SP immunohistochemical detection of nasopharyngeal carcinoma p53 protein expression and clinical follow-up of 5 years. Results: 84 patients with nasopharyngeal carcinoma p53 protein expression rate was 72.6% (61/ 84 ) . 84 patients were death in 44 cases, 37 cases ( 84.1 %) died within 3 years . The 3-year survival after treatment of the whole group was 56.0 % (47 /84) , p53 positive 3 - year survival rate was 46.0 % ( 28 / 61 ) , p53 -negative 3 -year survival rate of 82.6% (19 /23 ), positive and negative groups 3-year survival difference was statistically significant ( P lt ; 0.05 ) 84 cases of patients after 5-year survival was 47.6 % (40 /84) , p53 -positive 5-year survival rate of 39.3 ( 24 / 61 ) , the 5 - year survival rate of 70.0% (16/ 23 ) of the p53 negative , positive group and negative group, 5-year survival difference was statistically significant ( P lt ; 0.05 ) 84 patients with nasopharyngeal carcinoma in cervical lymph node metastasis in 71 cases (84.5%) , the transfer did not occur in 13 cases ( 15.5% ) . The p53 positive lymph node metastasis rate of 90.1 % ( 55 / 61 ) , p53 negative lymph node metastasis rate was 69.5% (16/ 23 ) , positive and negative lymph node metastasis rate difference was statistically significant ( P lt ; 0.05 ) . 84 cases in stage Ⅰ, Ⅱ 24 cases, including 19 cases of p53 -positive patients (79.2% ) , of negative 5 patients ( 20.8%) . Ⅲ, Ⅳ stage of 60 cases, p53-positive in 42 patients (70.0%) , negative in 18 patients (30.0% ) . p53 expression and clinical stages was no significant difference ( p gt ; 0.05 ) . Conclusion: The expression of p53 status in nasopharyngeal carcinoma patients with neck lymph node metastasis and prognosis, can be used as an independent prognostic factor for patients with nasopharyngeal carcinoma .
