Abstract


The thesis reviews the history and present situation of the study of genderlect, teases the main concepts and theories of the study of genderlect, attempts to analyze the manifestations of genderlect difference in Russian, and demonstrates the deeper cultural motivation that contributes to genderlect difference. Applying the Cultural Difference Theory, the thesis makes a study of genderlect in Russian in respect of language communication. I expect my research findings will be beneficial to the future study of genderlect in Russian.This thesis consists of four chapters, which are organized as follows.Chapter One is a rough survey of the history and present situation of the study of genderlect. The research goals and significance of the study are also mentioned in this chapter.Chapter Two discusses some theories concerning the study of genderlect, such as the distinction between sex and gender, genderlect difference and its relevant study, the theories in the study of genderlect, and the relation between culture and genderlect.Chapter Three is a summary of the manifestations of genderlect in Russian, which are shown first in the difference of discourse style between men and women, including the choice of topics, the control of the amount of talk, the pattern of turn-taking, etc; then in the difference of language expressions between men and women, such as discourse structure, and the use of curse and complements, etc.Chapter Four claims that cultural difference in gender is one of the main reasons for genderlect difference in Russian. This chapter mainly demonstrates the possibility that might bring about genderlect difference in Russian from two aspects of cultural connotations of gender—values and conventions.
