Abstract

Along with the increasing traffic volume, traveling speed and axle loads, serious premature failures occurred on the heavy-duty asphalt pavements within 1~2 years after opening to the traffic, such as bleeding, inside reveling, pumping, settlement and bottom stripping. The premature failures of the asphalt pavements are one of the major problems face now. Research shows that the premature failures relates to the effects of water on the asphalt pavements. Dynamic hydraulic pressure caused by the moving-vehicles is a main factor of the premature failures. In order to study the influence of water on the road performance, this paper conducts the main works as follows:An indoor testing apparatus is developed. This apparatus can simulate the dynamic hydraulic pressure that asphalt pavement endures. Put forwards a dynamic hydraulic pressure testing method base on the coupling action of load, water and temperature.According to this method, conducts the research on the influence of water on the high temperature stability, fatigue resistance, crack resistance at low temperature of 7 asphalt mixtures, considering the factors of asphalt, gradation and voidage. The results show that dynamic hydraulic pressure has adverse influences on the high, low temperature and fatigue resistance of asphalt mixture .The grade of the influence is .different under vary factors. In general, considering resisting the effects of dynamic hydraulic pressure, skeleton structure is better than suspend structure, asphalt with low viscosity is better than with high viscosity , the air void of 10% is the worst factor. Finally, study is conducted on the influences of three various water treatment, frost-thawing, immersion at high temperature, frost at low temperature, on the road performance of asphalt mixture. And the result is contrastive analysis with the dynamic hydraulic pressure test. Study indicates that the dynamic hydraulic pressure test with the coupling action of load, water and temperature has a greater effect than the static water test with coupling action of water and temperature. Putting the loading act into the test can accelerate the test process.
