Abstract


William Wordsworth, the great British Romantic poet, created large amounts of poems in his lifetime. The nature and the common people in rural life were chosen to be the subjects of his poetic creations. His ardent love of nature and his keen attention to and strong sympathy for the common people could be detected between the poetic lines.This thesis makes an attempt to pack up some findings and thoughts involving repetition in Wordsworth’s poetic works concerning common people in rural life. Wordsworth was a master depicting common people in his poems. He also mastered in strengthening his poetic expression by means of repetition. In his poetic works, not only repetition in form, such as repetition of words and phrases, repetition of sentences and repetition of sentence structures, but also repetition in content, such as motif repetition, could be found. In addition, same or similar person images appeared repeatedly in different works of the poet. Repetition can be recognized as a phenomenon in Wordsworth’s poetic creations. It deserves careful and systematic study.The body of the thesis consists of five parts. Chapter one is an introductory part of the thesis. Critical review of Wordsworth and his literary achievements is made in this part. An overview of repetition is also given in this part. Chapter two is devoted to an analysis of repetition in Wordsworth’s poetic creations. Chapter three aims to make an interpretation of repetition in form and content. Chapter four makes a study on the repetition of images of personae in Wordsworth’s different poems. Conclusion of the thesis is given in chapter five.Repetition, on one hand, is true to the language the poet chose to use in poems, and on the other hand, makes up the insufficiency of that language. Repetition contributes to emphasize what was depicted in poems, to deepen the thoughts and the themes the poet intended to deliver, and to express powerful feelings and emotions more naturally.Repetition is one of the necessary literary devices for English poetry. It is also prominent in Wordsworth’s poetic creations. Repetition contributes to constitute a rich and colorful poetic world in Wordsworth’s works. To approach Wordsworth’s poems with special attention on repetition can provide a wider space of reading and interpretation.
