Abstract


It is in the 1930’s that Wang Xiyan, a writer of realism, entered in the literary world. On one hand ,his works had the characteristics of propaganda and agitation because he was influenced by the Left Wing Literature; on the other hand, he insisted on viewing the characters in his works from the angle of life and humanity all along .Jn my opinion, the content of Wang’s works were mainly about two fields: one is the gloomy and heavy life and the distorted humanity resulted from kinds of inhumanity factors such as poverty burden, confines of traditional culture, war’s destroy and so on, the other one is the exhausted spirit and the struggling soul of the characters who lived difficult. This article is going to probe into and analysis two kinds of characters”nature peasant and intellectual’s spirit and conscience from the humanity angle. This article includes three parts: first one is “the distorted humanity under survival strain” the second is “the struggling spirit under the living burden”and the last one is “the sorrowful song of loner’s life” The first part of this article mainly expounds that peasants in China who experienced several thousand of years”development history haven’t shaken off savage inhumanity living conditions as animals which even amounted to the top of inhumanity. To survive the persons lost their gentle humanity, degenerated to become money”slaves. And because of the short of money they became hot tempered, simply, rough, savage and peremptory. The savage disposition of the poor result from that they were enslaved by material and oppressed by man for lack of money. The repression of poverty forced the poor changed into pefty and low slaves on one occasion and imperious despot on the opposite occasion .The two different expressions of mind were abnormal which had distorted characteristics. The female, especially the child brides, was catabolized so severely that they almost reached to the enslaved extremity. They were not only oppressed doubly by male and superior, but also catabolized by themselves consistently. The source of such kind of catabolization lay in this: the traditional culture’s regulation of the relationship between persons was tatus”rather than argains” which formed China’s feudalistic pyramidal social framework. Life was directly threatened by warfare and people who struggled along the living and death line sometimes were degraded into inhumanity . In Wang Xiyan’s fictions, the catabolization of human beings by warfare mainly embodied in the following aspects: First, injustice warfare brought with anxiety and fear. Under the controlled of such mind, the aggressor insanely persecuted and devastated the contrary part, degraded themselves down to beasts; Second, warfare forced human beings to lose their conscience, produced crazy retaliating feeling and bring the simple, absolute and polarized valuation. Third, warfare made people get the wrong chance sense, they thought of chance life as if all things could hardly be anticipated and grasped and only determined by fate; Fourth, warfare parked people at a troublous atmosphere of horror and distorted interpersonal love connection. In a world, poverty, feudalism culture together with warfare which made up a sort of inhumanity survival corner which brought humanistic fission and distortion.
