Abstract

ObjectiveTo evaluate the distribution of choroidal neovascularization in different fundus diseases and the characteristics of CNV by.fundus fluorescein angiography (FFA).MethodsThe clinical data of 8500 patients who visited Peking Union Medical Colloge Hospital and finished FFA from January 9th,2001 to August 31th,2009 were included in our study. We screened 427 cases of choroidal neovascularization from these patients by both color fundus photographs and FFA.ResultsChoroidal neovascularization was found in 427 cases. Among them, wet age-related macular degeneration (AMD) was 209 cases (254 eyes), central exudative chorioretinopathy (CEC) was 132 cases (139 eyes), pathologic myopia (PM) was 48 cases (61 eyes), and other fundus diseases were 38 cases. The percentage of wet AMD in overall CNV was 48.9%(209/427), CEC was 30.9%(132/427), PM was 11.2%(48/427), and other CNV was 9%(39/427), respectively. The age of wet AMD patients was from. 43 to 89 yrs (mean age 64.2 yrs), and the male patients were 106 cases (50.7%), female patients were 103 cases (50.3%), unilateral eyes were164, and bilateral eyes were 45. The age of CEC patients was from 10 to 52 yrs (mean age 27.4 yrs), and the male patients were 39 cases, female patients were 93 cases, unilateral eyes were 125, bilateral eyes were 7. The age of PM patients was from 19 to 68 yrs (mean age 47.3 yrs), male patients were 15 cases, female patients were 33 cases, unilateral eyes were 35, and bilateral eyes were 13. Among 209 cases (254 eyes) of wet AMD,161 eyes (63.4%) were demonstrated as occult CNV comfirmed by FFA, while 46 eyes (18.1%) were classic CNV. The CNV become scarring in 47 eyes (18.5%) among AMD patients.ConclusionsThe most common cause of CNV in our study was wet AMD, the second cause of CNV was CEC, and the third cause was PM. The occult CNV in wet AMD was the major CNV type (62.8%). Among these CNV patients, the age of wet AMD patients was the oldest (64.2 yrs), the following was PM patients (47.3 yrs), and the youngest was CEC patients (27.4 yrs). The male female ratio of wet AMD was almost equal, while CEC and PM were found more likely occurred in female patients. Our data also showed that CNV occurred unilaterally more than bilaterally in AMD, CEC and PM.
