Abstract

Dongba Character is a gem of Chinese culture. It is hornored as "the living fossil of the history of characters". Its evident pictorial attributes attracts the attention of both foreign and native researchers. However, as society develops, Dongba Character gradually starts to lose its function as a language and its inheritance and utilization is faced with great challenges. This paper takes the graph configuration as entry point, focuses on the infrastructural feature, "graph element" as basic carrier, discusses about, of Dongba Character Configuration, what’s worthwhile and how to apply them. For these studies will help to strengthen the visual recognition of Dongba characters, guide graphic design, rich design elements, so as to enhance the artistic value of Dongba language and cultural values, promoting a new perspective and cultural heritage.From the development perspective, this paper focuses on the dynamic variation and combination configuration process of Dongba Character’s basic graph element. From synchronic and diachronic perspectives, it also explores configuration art of Dongba Character, analyzes each configuration art separately, discusses each configuration art’s the revelation for graphic design, and applies each configuration art to actual cases. This study is of a positive significance for the development of national art and the development of modern design.The thesis is divided into eight chapters:The first chapter is an introduction. This chapter describes some domestic and international researches related to this topic, explained the purpose and significance of this study and the main content.The second chapter is about the configuration Art of Dongba Character. This chapter analyzes reasons for the formation of Dongba Character’s configuration Art, proposes the concept "form factor" as the basic carrier of Dongba character, and concludes and elaborates the category of configuration art.The third chapter is about the multidimensional use of extracted Dongba images in configuration art and its applications. This chapter analyzes the connotation of Dongba characters multi-dimensional image extraction in configuration art, discussed its inspiration and its application in creative graphic design.Chapter four is about interesting mode-presenting methods in Dongba character’s configuration art and its application. This chapter analyzes the connotation of these methods, illustrates its enlightenment to graphic design and applies them into tea package design and Olympic logo design.Chapter five is about associative element-combining configuration in Dongba Character configuration art and its applications.This chapter analyzes the basic meaning, form and meaning and presenting techniques of Dongba Character’s associative element-combining configuration. It also illustrates its enlightenment to graphic design and applies them into Yonghe Soybean Milk brand image advertisement design and Dongba priest image design.Chapter six is about characteristic-extraction in Dongba Character configuration art and its application. This chapter analyses the connotation of this configuration art of characteristic-extraction, illustrates its enlightenment for graphic design and applies this configuration art of characteristic extracting into graphical design of four season words.Chapter seven is about element-replacement in Dongba Character configuration art and its application. This chapter analyses the connotation of element-replacement, illustrates its enlightenment for font design and applies element replacing configuration into graphic design which combines both Dongba Character and Chinese Character.Chapter eight is the conclusion. This chapter explains the results and innovation of this whole passage and the outlook for future research.
