With a long history, Chinese calligraphy art shows unique and abundant forms and profound cultural connotation, and a relatively high research value in the aspects of history, architecture, modern art design, etc.The paper explores first from the concept and components of the calligraphy art to the concept, type, characteristics, the relationship between man and environment and embodied cultural connotation of environmental ceramics. Finally, the problem how to use the thoughts and methods of calligraphy art in environmental ceramics design is studied. Specific aesthetic characteristics of calligraphy art have been discussed from six angles respectively of abstraction, line, composition, techniques, raven and artistic conception, which helps summarize its rich forms. Calligraphy art’s culture connotation has also been analyzed from four aspects of Yin and Yang interaction, unity, halfway path and the natural way. Based on the analysis of the characteristics, the relationship between man and environment and culture connotation of environmental ceramics, it is found that many interlinks and similarities have existed between calligraphy art and environmental ceramics in space conception expression, nature intimacy and humanistic spirit embodying, etc. Therefore, in this theory background, from four angles of modeling language, shape modeling, basic principle and artistic conception expression, the applying thoughts of calligraphy art in environmental art are put forward. Following this way, four basic principles are put forward:shape principle, moderate principle, reasonable principle, rational principle, in order to guide design practice. Then specific methods of application have been analyzed:use directly the calligraphy art as adornment language, refining and reconstructing the calligraphy art elements. In the refining and reconstruction method, through form’s simplification and recycling and color’s continue use and reorganization to create calligraphy art, involving it in a most suitable way into, and analyzing and proving its feasibility with outstanding cases.This paper tries to explore the ways and methods of inheritance and innovation of the calligraphy art in environmental ceramics’design and creation, which is of certain practical significance for the development of environmental ceramics.
