Abstract


Christmas is both a sacred religious holiday, but also a cultural and commercial phenomenon around the world. With the widespread dissemination of Christmas, a lot of Christmas music to attract people from all over the world. Christmas music Christmas indispensable part and an important symbol. However, so far about Christmas music on very rare. Most people do not even know there is a difference between fact, Christmas carols and Christmas songs. The lyrics of the Christmas carol based on the theme of Christmas and even entire winter. Carol lyrics often adapted from Christian doctrine or extol the birthday of Jesus. Typical Christmas carols contain at least one of the lyrics and a section of choral music. They often have different tunes, because the tunes are generally sound arc and melodies from the Middle Ages. Christmas songs is recommended movies or other entertainment media specifically praise of Christmas songs, but its content is not entirely related to religious topics are not included in the scope of carols. These Christmas songs in form more complex than Christmas carols. In contrast, the Christmas songs are not devout religious carols, but more joyous and festive atmosphere. Few research scholars from the linguistic point of view the lyrics of this particular discourse form of research, not to mention specifically the lyrics to Christmas carols and Christmas songs. Based on this situation, this paper will be functional linguistic theory based on comparative analysis of traditional Christmas carols and contemporary Christmas song lyrics. Due to the large number of Christmas carols and Christmas songs, it is not possible to examine all. Analysis: mood and modality of choice as the corpus of this study, and 40 samples from three aspects from the two major categories, each selected 20 popular lyrics select process type choice and Theme. The aim is to identify the three yuan functions of the similarities and differences in the two sets of discourse, and pointed out that the language of their respective significant characteristics. This paper consists of five parts. The first chapter introduces the research background, significance, research questions, research methods, made a brief introduction of the Christmas carols and Christmas songs, and pointed out that the architecture of the whole paper. The second chapter is a literature review, a review of domestic and foreign researchers lyrics Christmas carols and Christmas songs research and the field of discourse analysis has been made achievements, and finally make a brief evaluation of the existing literature. The third chapter is the theoretical framework, a brief review of the basic theory of functional linguistics, its six core ideology and meta-functions theory. On this basis, determines the specific scope of the present study. The fourth chapter analyzes the the selected corpus Ghost function realization mode, and comparative analysis of two sets of corpus. Large amounts of data and clear form elaborate tone analysis, of Transitivity Analysis and Thematic analysis of the similarities and differences found. The condensed language set forth in the comparison of the data. The fifth chapter is the conclusion summarizes the main findings of the paper pointed out the limitations of this study and future recommendations related fields of study.
