Abstract


As a component of higher education in China, higher vocational and technical education has emerged about thirty years and undergone a systematic and speedy growth under our education context, and cultivated a new generation with specialty-related skills and language applicability to meet the needs of speedy economic and social development. With the entrance to WTO, English is more and more practical for us in all fields:and English for Special Purposes (ESP) in higher vocational and technical institutes (HVTI) has become a major curriculum of English teaching in the 21st century.ESP course design has drawn many domestic scholars’ attention. They have realized that ESP teaching in HVTI should form its unique teaching conception, mode and methodology. As there is no a complete and sound ESP course design system so far, the teaching of ESP follows that of general English and neglects the learners’ needs, the author tries to design a unique, systematic and learning-centered ESP course for HVTI students, i.e. the course is based on the students’professional and learning needs and the learners are taken account of at every stage of the design process.The author begins with an overview of the ESP theories, including the definitions, development of ESP, needs analysis, and some typical features of ESP course. Based on the theories above, the author investigates current situations of ESP course design in HVTI, makes a detailed analysis, and puts forwards some effective solutions from the four aspects of ESP course, such as syllabus, materials, methodology and assessment, and endeavors to design an ESP course with its own characteristics for college students which meets the goals of higher vocational and technical education. To prove the effect of this research, the author offers some concrete application examples in teaching practice. The author finds that this study is of theoretical implications and practical values from different angles.
