Abstract


Although Chinese euphemism has been widely discussed from the aspects of sociolinguistics, pragmatics and rhetoric, comparatively little attention has been paid to Chinese euphemism pedagogy. There are a variety of classifications for euphemism, but most scholars, east and west, agree that some euphemisms have fixed word forms and connotations, while others are highly context-related.This thesis endeavors to compare English euphemism and Chinese euphemism form the angle of taboos and euphemism formation. Then the thesis tries to find out the difficulties for foreign students when they learn Chinese as a second language. Based on the comparisons, a survey on HSK corpus, a questionnaire on euphemistic usages, interviews with the students who have taken part in the questionnaire and euphemism study on Chinese text books are carried out so as to find out how the students master euphemisms and spot all the possibilities of their errors. Finally, the writer puts forward a few constructive strategies and ways of euphemism strategies and pedagogies.
