Abstract

Mechanical properties of carbon nanotubes theoretical methods are commonly used molecular dynamics, and ab initio algorithms tied tight , etc., but these methods are difficult to carry out large scale simulation and continuum theory and finite element method proved to be very promising cross -scale computing tools . In this paper, continuum mechanics and finite element method to study the stability of carbon nanotubes , elastic properties and contact problems discussed macro mechanics at the nanometer scale applicability. Firstly, respectively, based on the model and cylindrical cylindrical shell model , the boundary conditions at the introduction of carbon nanotubes surface energy factor , derived discriminant minimum radius carbon nanotubes , the resulting minimum radius and quantum mechanical calculations and experimental results are similar . Second, based on the film model and exponential Cauchy-Born rule , with the quasi- continuum mechanics derived SWNT continuum constitutive equations , and calculate the single-walled carbon nanotube Young's modulus and Poisson's ratio ; then the derivation of the constitutive equations to study the elastic properties of carbon nanotube structure on impact . Finally, based on the shell model and the elastic constants of carbon nanotubes obtained earlier , using the finite element software ABAQUS simulation of single -walled carbon nanotube contact problems , in which the carbon tube between the van der Waals force defined by the user subroutine UINTER .
