Abstract


Traditional bamboo furniture is mainly composed of bamboo culms and bamboo plate or strips, and it has a long history in China, because of its proper values, it has been popular since 2 thousand years ago among the people. However, the bamboo furniture manufacturing is still in a primitive state of individual handwork presently. Bamboo is an important component of forest resources on the earth, which is famous for its material quality, reproductive capacity, vitality, fast growth, high output, early-maturing and short rotation. China is rich in bamboo resources. How to improve the bamboo’s usage level and make the traditional bamboo furniture manufacturing modernized is an important task not only to the furniture industry, but also to the bamboo machining industry in China. This paper, for the first time, focuses on the research of bamboo furniture structure systematically. The main research results are as follows:1. Based on comprehensive investigation, systematical research was done on the material properties, the history and the manufacturing situation in china of traditional bamboo furniture. Furthermore, modernized improvement and its research content of this kind of furniture is also put forward to.2. In bamboo furniture, bamboo has three types: bamboo culms, bamboo plates and bamboo strips. Research of furniture structure must base on these three kinds of bamboo components.3. Joint and assembling structure of classical bamboo furniture was systematically studied. Based on the analyzing of functional theory and reasonable factors of those structures, the disadvantages of those structures were pointed out. The research could provide theory foundation to the structure improvement.4. Research was done on new types of structure, Various new types of hardware special for bamboo furniture were devised, such as pre-insertion joint, cannula joint and L-shaped metal sheet joint. These efforts offer a new idea for the classical bamboo furniture’s modernized manufacturing.5. Based on studying and summing up the structure of traditional bamboo furniture, a new modern manufacturing process was devised for modern production of traditional bamboo furniture.
