Abstract


Landscape Painting of the Song Dynasty has been considered a monument in its history of the Chinese painting. The study of the skills and history of landscape painting during this period of time has inevitably involved the study of the artistic development influenced by the social ideology and background of the time. The works of the art by the painters in the Song Dynasty reflected their philosophical ideology and theories in this given historical period. On the other side, looking into their works will help us to have a better understanding of the social ideology and inside information and details of the culture about the Song Dynasty, which is the focus of this thesis.Referring to the "Taoism" and "Confucianism", people can not help associating with the abstruse and boring theories. The comments and reviews on the "Taoism "and "Confucianism "in the landscape painting through the history have been restricted within the abstract theoretical statements.This thesis has selected several works of Fan Kuan, Li Tang and Ma Yuan, the three great painters who were the best representatives on the style of landscape painting during this period, based on the understanding of the" Taoism " and "Confucianism", the idealist philosophy of the Song Dynasty.The thesis has integrated Lao Zi’s explanation to the "Taoism" with painters’ theoretical achievements from creative practices, endeavouring to make a depth analysis through the brief and explicit illustration with an aim to make it more visualized, specific and vivid. This is a meaningful approach on studying landscape paintings of the Song Dynasty no matter from the content or the formality.Changeable YinYang" Water Method" in the paintings of Fan Kuan; black and white diamond patterns which was" too profound and subtle to discern" in Li Tang’s works; triangle space which was either bright or dim in the works of Ma Yuan, which all constituted the special essence of the landscape paintings by artists in Song Dynasty.Research on the "Taoism" and "Confucianism" in the landscape paintings by the painters in the Song Dynasty is able to enhance our knowledge about the theory foundation and skills, and the more important is to enable us understand some mutual law followed by everything in the universe. The thesis has provided a significant inspiration on how to recognize and understand our traditional arts, nature and our own creative practice.
