Abstract

Foreign player is a kind of commercial behavior, which arises under the big background of the international development of competitive sports. By employing forgein players the professional league wants to improve their technical and tactical implementation, attract the audience’s attention and expand the league’s international influence, so that the commercial value of the professional league could be developed.From the date of birth the CBA League has been engaged in the exploration of professionalization and has been very seriously to the hiring of foreign players. In 1996, the first Chinese Basketball Association had introduced the first foreign player , Mikhail , who came from Uzbekistan. From then on every team began to try to employ foreign players in general. And the foreign players, which only supplement of the league was, began gradually to play a more important role.Today with the development of professionalization process and the influence of the league, more and more excellent foreign players join the league. And foreign players have become a indispensable constituent part. But in the process of introduction of foreign players the CBA has encountered many problems, such as how to develop a reasonable system of foreign players, which can adapt the process of professionalization on the one hand and won’t have a negative impact on the training of Chinese basketball talents on the other hand. This thesis will analyse these aspects like the basic situation of the foreign players, the introducing purposes and means of the clubs, the evolution of the foreign assistance system, and so on.NBA is the world’s most successful professional basketball league. After years of development, both the league system and the commercial operation of NBA are very complete. On the stage of NBA a number of players, who were called "international players", also have a place of their own. These players come from outside the United States; they are equivalent to foreign assistance in the CBA League. According to statistics, the number of Chinese players in NBA has reached one-fifth of the total number of the NBA players. To analyze the ways of selection, management and training of foreign players of the NBA league is also one of the main purpose of this study.Analysis revealed: during the 16 seasons of the NBA league, the average height of foreign players is basically stable, and shows downward trend in the past three seasons; the average age is 27.3, this is in the best age period of the basketball players; the average weight of foreign players reaches 103.9 kg; in the introduced foreign players, the number of centre forward players is the largest, 172, which is 45% of the numbers of all foreign players, on the contrary the number of defender and forward players is less; clubs prefer black American athletes when they select foreign players, and in the past two seasons the number of Asian players has increased because of the changing of foreign assistance policy;Because of the dual character of the CBA league, it is not rational to copy the completely open system of NBA. CBA League is still in the continuous improvement stage of the foreign assistance policy and has not yet a completely introduction mode of foreign players. Problems like narrow range of player selection, the instability of the financial position of the clubs and the frequent changes of the foreign assistance system have became the main factors, which influence the introduction of foreign players and the attitude of the clubs to use foreign players. The CBA league has strict rules to the numbers of introduced players, their playing time and salary standards, which are quite different to the local players.Through the introduction of the foreign players the CBA league has expanded it’s influence in the world; the private skills of the foreign players has improved the enjoyment of the games and attracted more audience; foreign players have brought advanced basketball concept for the league; objectively the introduction of foreign players has played a certain role of improving the overall level of basketball games. On the other side, the outstanding performance of foreign players in the league has certain negative effects on the training of basketball talents of our country; the instability of foreign assistance has caused the chaos of the management of the clubs; in recent years because of scrambling for excellent foreign players the clubs bid up the salary, what has caused great financial pressure.Based on the analysis above, because of the the specificity of the league in it’s own, CBA can neither prohibit the using of foreign players completely, nor copy the foreign assistance policy of NBA and liberalize completely the restrictions of the introduction of foreign players. The league should continue to improve the rules and regulations, form a systematic policy system, strengthen the development of supportive talents and fundamentally enhance the local talent reserves. Regulating the management of foreign players, guiding the clubs to change their hasting thoughts about quick success and instant benefits, focusing on the integration of foreign payers with the team and making the foreign players be a part of the CBA culture.
