Abstract


Objective: To investigate the expression and significance of erythropoietin– producing hepatocellularA2 (EphA2) receptor tyrosine kinase in colorectal carcinoma and the correlation between EphA2 expression and tumor angiogenesis.Methods: Immunohistochemistry was used to examine the EphA2 expression in 70 surgically resected colorectal carcinoma and the paired normal large intestine mucosa tissues . Microvessels in colorectal carcinoma were counted after immunostaining for CD34, and the correlation between EphA2 expression and Microvessel counts (MVCs) in colorectal carcinoma were assessed.Results: Expressions of EphA2 protein in carcinoma tissues were obviously higher than that in normal large intestine mucosa tissues (P<0.001) The overexpression of EphA2 protein correlated with differentiation grades, invasion depth and gross type of carcinomas (P<0.05), but didn’t with age, sex of patients ,lymph node ,and hematogenous metastasis of adenocarcinomas (P> 0.05 ) We observed specific EphA2 staining was present in both cancer cells and tumor vascular endothelial cells. Microvessel density (MVD) after immunostaining for CD34 were significantly correlated with overexpression of EphA2 , high microvessel density were present in EphA2 - strong positive tumor areas.Conclusion: There is a correlation between EphA2 protein overexpression, and tumorigenesis ,infiltration of colorectal carcinoma
