Abstract


Globalization has accelerated intercultural contact of all countries in the world. In order to achieve a more smooth communication between countries, foreign language education nowadays not only attaches importance to the enhancement of the learners’linguistic knowledge and skills, but also stresses the cultivation of linguistic competence, especially the cultivation of cross-cultural communication competence.An apology is a speech act and also a common linguistic behavior which can be often encountered in social interaction. Apologies in different languages have something in common, and yet, different languages reflecting different cultures differ from each other in terms of the choice of apology strategies. Despite the fact that Japanese are deeply influenced by the Chinese culture, they choose apparently different apology strategies from Chinese.In the past 30 years, the western linguists have conducted a series of practicable investigations on the speech act of apology, most of which focused on the comparison between Japanese and Koreans, Chinese and English as well as Japanese and English. However, research has been seldom done on the comparison between Chinese and Japanese with respect to the speech act of apology.This thesis is intended to investigate the speech act of apology in Chinese and Japanese by making a comparison of the apology strategies employed by Chinese and Japanese. And identifying the factors affecting the difference of apology strategies chosen by people of the two countries.The findings of the investigation show that apologies occur with a high frequency in both Chinese and Japanese, which is largely due to the thought of "harmony" and the culture of "propriety" the two countries have valued since ancient times; that both Chinese and Japanese closely use direct expressions for making apologies and other strategies, but Japanese people place more emphasis on the fixed expressions for making apologies whatever they do, while Chinese people are more likely to express their feeling of remorse by using the unfixed expressions for apologizing; when Chinese people perform the same speech act. Furthermore Chinese are more likely to show their care for the victim, thus making their distance closer, while Japanese people are inclined to express their remorse by admitting their responsibility. In addition, it is an interesting phenomenon that Chinese females usually unconsciously used the combination of Chinese and English expressions to express their apologies due to the influence of English in the world.This thesis endeavors to fulfill the expectation that people of the two countries can mutually respect the cultural differences and the relationship between the two countries can be strengthened.
