Abstract

History Society of Yenching University was a research organization of teachers and students from History Department of Yenching University. Under the condition that few institutes could last long at that time, History Society of Yenching University had kept active for 14 years, published 12 issue Historical Annual, and gave very brilliant shows in the academic joint campaign in north China. Many famous scholars gathered around History Society of Yenching University and drew a lot of attention from the academy. This thesis attempts to compile materials about it, in order to reconstruct its history, and analyze its characters of its organization and behavior, and analyze its administrative system arrangement and operation system feature, and hope it help us to enhance the progress of historiography today.The whole thesis is formed with three parts.The first part is mainly about the history of History Society of Yenching University, especially about its establishing background and the establishment. History Society of Yenching University was founded in autumn 1928 when academy in the north regained its energy. The institute attended the campaign of the establishment of The Chinese Society of Historiography in winter after its establishment in the fall, more than 20 members of teachers and students had attended this alliance of Beijing academy. From its founding to 1941 when Japanese invaders enclosed Yenching University, History Society of Yenching University had to close, it had existed for 14 years ,and had gone through approximately to starting(1928-1930), developing(1930-1935) , is flourishing( 1935-1937) , maintaining ( 1937-1941) etc. 4 period. With the aid of Professor William hung, Gu Jiegang and Deng Zhicheng , the institute made its mark. The organism became more and more elaborate.A group of new scholars grew up,such as Qi Sihe, Weng Dujian, Deng Siyu, Tan Qixiang, Hou Renzhi and Wang Zhonghan etc. When the whole nation was in a tremendous disaster that never seen before, they kept going on their research and refused to cooperate with the invaders. After 1952, Yenching University merges into Beijing University; History Society became past eventually, and faded out gradually out of people’s vision.The second part is generally about the organizational system, main activities and constitution of the crew. Organizational system is relied on the History Department, so its organization is relatively simple due to the principle of simplification. Besides the plenary meeting, the institute had only two subordinate branch, staff meeting and the History Annual commission at first. When their activities became more and more, they set three more branches to in charge of academic speeches, field trip and research & publication respectively. All these are called staff commission. Additionally, the institute invited two teachers to take charge of adviser. Publication task is relatively complex and onerous, so they set up the publishing committee to hold the powers of History Annual additionally to uphold. To guarantee that publication be in high quality, they set up a censorship committee additionally.
