Abstract


1891 established St. John's University (formerly the St. John's College in 1879) and the establishment of Yenching University in 1919, is the founder of American Christian churches in China universities. Before exercise in a non-Christian, St. John's University was the first university in China founded one Church, is a prestigious institution of higher learning, the University has been a banner of the church, the \\In the non-Christian movement, St. John's University passive conservative, stick to religious, refused reforms to adapt to social development; Yenching University actively debugging positive change, efforts to adapt to the development of society. Non-Christian movement, the St. John's University to decline gradually as negative conservative, than ever before; Yenching University as active debugging has been a greater opportunity for development, and gradually develop into Tsinghua University, Beijing par reputable institutions. Compare two schools development, on the one hand helps us to understand the development of Christian universities in China in different directions, on the other hand we can better understand the relationship between higher education and social development. This thesis is divided into four chapters, two universities were discussed between success or failure in the path of development: The first chapter introduces the non-Christian movement, from its background, to which it has experienced three stages of development, and finally comes to Impact on Education - contributed to the recovery of the right to education campaign, compared to two universities historical background for detailed instructions. The second chapter describes non-Christian movement before the development of two schools, St. John's University before exercise in a non-Christian glorious past, from school to the renowned beach on the process. Yenching University in a non-Christian school before exercise hardships, school difficulties encountered in the process. Chapter III presents two non-Christian movement universities different development path, St. John's elimination conservative, stick to religious, refused to make concessions; Yenching University initiative, commissioning their own development path. From the religious and secular education, Chinese people participate in school management, to treat the student movement, the Chinese government filed four aspects of analysis to illustrate two different school development. Chapter IV presents the non-Christian movement after the results of the development of the two schools, St. John's University as negative toward the conservative end of the decline; Yenching University actively debugging, the development of China's premier prestigious.
