Abstract


Sociological study of language learning is an important area of ??study of the language, and in recent years more and more attention from scholars at home and abroad. This article is based East China Normal University Professor Zou Weicheng hosted by Shanghai Philosophy and Social Sciences Research topics gap between the rich and the poor of basic education in Shanghai Foreign Language Education Research (Project No.: 2003BZH005) collected on family background and English learning outcomes data. The study used a sampling survey, from Shanghai, 704 junior high school (including public schools and private schools), according to the principle of stratified sampling in a random sample of eight schools, three days of final-year students of 8 schools ( a total of 2034 people) All survey. The research results show that the family economic status, the parents social power and the level of education of the parents have a significant impact on the confidence and interest of the achievements of students learning English and learning English. Privileged family background for students learning English to provide various forms of high-quality learning opportunities and long-term adequate funding support, thereby greatly enhancing the confidence and interest in learning English. The study confirmed that, even at the stage of compulsory education, and environmental factors for a variety of learning opportunities for successful foreign language learning has a significant impact. This paper is divided into seven parts. The first chapter briefly describes the current situation of English education in China. Constitute the theoretical basis for the second chapter, the impact of family background on language learning explained from the point of view of linguistics, pedagogy and sociology, introduced this respect at home and abroad, research projects and achievements. The third chapter traces the history of foreign language teaching in China, outlined the status of foreign language learning in different social and historical ups and downs of the stage, with particular emphasis on foreign language learning and social interaction of family factors. The fourth chapter is the introduction to research methods, including a description of the sampling method and sample questionnaires and test data in this article from other sources, as well as description of some of the important variables. The fifth chapter is the data analysis, the analysis of family background variables (family income, parental education level, parents, social power) variables (test scores, learning English and English learning opportunity to spend learning English, interest in learning English start learning English time). The sixth chapter is a discussion of the results of the data analysis, analysis of basic English education in Shanghai teaching the uneven distribution of resources and the lack of English education in the regular school, pointed out the various aspects of the impact of family background on learning English, and further pointed out that the family background on English learning to be constrained by other factors (national and local education policy, regional differences, the learners themselves factors). Chapter VII is the concluding part of this article, combined with changes in the education policy of the state in recent years, and pointed out that with the improvement of people's living standards and the quality of school English education resources continued to grow, the impact of family background on learning English will surely shrinking.
