Abstract

Although China economy sustained the 2008 global financial crisis with steady GDP growth, the impact on the export-oriented industry has caused China to shift from exported-oriented economy to domestic demand-pulling economy. With the development of western inland regions to induce domestic demand, Chengdu, based on its superb investment environment, has become the favorite choice for top hi-tech corporation, such as Intel and Foxcom, to establish their new plants or subsidiary companies. These changes have imposed new opportunities as well as challenges to local financial institutions.The author of this dissertation has worked as loan manager in one of the largest commercial banks in Chengdu for years. Before 2008, most commercial loans applicants are from infrastructure sectors such as water power, railway, and real estate. In recent years, more and more hi-tech companies start to expand their production lines in SiChuan. As the loan officer, she found the different nature of these new loan applicants comparing with traditional clientele. In order to better understand and serve hi-tech clients, all frontline managers are required to learn the market environment and technology cycles. This article, serving as a template for analyzing hi-tech project, plays an important role in helping the author understand the hi-tech industry and could serve as important reference and blueprint for pratitioners in financial industry.The article is a feasibility study of a LCD product line project from a bank’s perpspective. It has six sections. Section 1 introduces the research method and establishes the significance of the study. Section 2 covers the background of the project and clients. Section 3 introduces the LCD technology development history and current market situation, emphasizing the impact of technology cycle and competition environment on the project. Section 4 forecasts the operation revenues and cash flows of the project and utilizes NPV, IRR, and payback period modles to evaluate the financial viability of the project. Section 5 applies breakeven and sensitivity analysis to evaluate the risks inheritated in the project and propose corresponding measures to mitigate the risks. The final section is the summary of the study. The final findings indicate the bank should be very cautious about this LCD product line project.This study builds on a real case study of bank loan evaluation project and adds theoretical analysis in it. It could potential benefit three groups of audiences. First, it sheds some lights on people who want to know more about the macroeconomic investment environment in Southwest China. Second, it offers the first-hand information for practioners in commercial banks. Third, it serves as case study for students who learnt the finance models and knowledge in the school but haven?ˉt applied it to solve real world problems.
