Abstract


Buddhist art work has first flourished in western region in China since Buddhism is introducted to China from India during Han Dynasty. The carvings on grottoes and temple building that ensued, the art of paiting religious murals gradually gained prominence.In the Jin and Tang Dynasty, the earliest silk painting as well as Buddhism art work have great effected on traditional Chinese painting in central China. Grotto murals, wall murals stone carvings, brick carvings and lacquer paintings absorbed the culture in central China and syncretized traditional Chinese painting in Han dinasty. In fact, Buddhist art work promotes the development of traditional Chinese painting. Especially in Tang dynasty, figure painting depicting the life of nable women and court ladies has reached its artistic peak in traditional Chinese art.The thesis have investigated Xinjiang Grotto Murals and Dunhuang Mogao Caves and argues the Xinjiang and Mogao grotto murals are not rearly the indian stye. They inherited the artistic traditions of western region of China and absorbed the merits of ancient arts from India and Buddhist art works with strong local features. The special painting style of western region of China comes into being.In the central China, the carvings on grottoes and temple building have strong features of the painting style of western region in China. On the one hand, the paintig also absorbed Buddhist art work. On the other hand, the skillful use inherited the painting style of western region of China, such as lines, color, objects etc. Therefore, the research indicates that the painting style of western region in China transformed the traditional Chinese painting in the central China in Jin and Tang dynasty, which comprises an important branch of tranditional Chinese painting today.
